Saltstraumen, live under water

An underwater camera at 22 m depth in Saltstraumen near Bodø, Norway. Nord University in cooperation with TiVA.

About the stream

In daylight we stream live from the camera, with highlights in between. At night we show selected clips of the fish seen here: Atlantic cod, saithe, Atlantic wolffish, Atlantic halibut and several wrasses.

Saltstraumen is often called the world's strongest tidal current. Up to 400 million cubic metres of seawater rush through the 150 m wide strait every six hours, and the current turns four times a day.

Research

Nord University uses live cameras in Saltstraumen to develop AI that identifies and counts fish. Saltstraumen has been a marine protected area since 2013.
